David Davis is the guest on today’s show. Davis is a journalist, and the author of the new book “Waterman: The Life and Times of Duke Kahanamoku.” It is, in fact, the first comprehensive biography of Duke Kahanamoku. A lot of has been written about Duke and there’s been a mythology that has developed around him, but in Waterman, Davis takes a very journalistic approach to researching the facts of the man himself. He provides social, political and cultural context that helps to better understand Hawai’i itself and just how astounding Duke’s accomplishments really were.
We focused this conversation on getting to know the personality of Duke. We discuss some of the adversity Duke faced, financially and racially, and we discuss some of the misconceptions the public has of Duke.
The book will be released on October 1st, via Nebraska Press.
