Well this is a bummer… Surfer has closed its doors after 60 years. I’ve been lucky to have been there for about 20 of them and to have worked with great crew… my editors in particular. @chris_mauro @joelerson @brendon_thomas @todprod have all been great collaborators and mates who’ve carried the cultural weight of that mag proudly. @grantellis1 I’m going to throw you in there too, bru. Nothing broken about the magazine and it’s voice, just changing times and a shitty corporate media landscape. What Todd’s done with Surfer lately makes me feel it’s more the start of something than the end, and I hope a surfer, somewhere gets a hold of the magazine – or whatever form it takes – and starts publishing it again from the spare room in their house in between surfs, takes it back to where it started, the circle of life completing.

MAURICE COLE’S BID FOR SHIRE COUNCIL

View this post on Instagram

Trump v Biden will be a walk in the park when compared with Uncle Maurie v the Surf Coast Shire establishment. Over 50 years, nobody has worked harder to preserve the coastline around Bells and the character of Torquay than @mcsurfboards. At an age he should be shaping in the Chook Shed in between two surfs a day at his spot between The Bowl and Rincon, he’s putting his hand up to run for council to save the coast he loves from becoming South West Grovedale. And don’t get him started on that bloody Winkipop platform! But if you live local and care about the coast and town here, get behind him. The council meetings alone will be entertainment enough… and he might just save the place in the process.
