089 – Randy Rarick

Play

From creating the professional surfing tour to traveling the globe and being the very first surfer at some of the best surf spots in the world, Randy Rarick is one of few people who has contributed back to surfing as much as he has received. In today’s environment where nearly every moment of a professional surfer’s life is documented, curated, monetized, and exploited, Randy’s lived a very different existence. The vast majority of Randy’s surf experience has gone undocumented. He is more deeply woven into competitive surfing, board building, and surf travel than anyone I can think of. That certainly qualifies him to be guest on the show, but what makes it even better is that he’s affable, sharp, his recall is incredible and his knowledge pool is vast, so this is my attempt to unpack just a few layers of Randy Rarick. I hope that you enjoy today’s show.

087 – Malcolm Campbell and The Bonzer

Play

In today’s episode we discuss the Bonzer design, the role that it’s played in surfing, and the surf world’s quirky social dynamics that sometimes push and often impede board design evolution. The Bonzer is the first truly functional, high-performance three finned surfboard design, and the Campbell Brothers introduced it a full decade prior to the invention of the Thruster. We bring today’s episode straight from the Malcolm’s kitchen in his home in Oxnard. Enjoy!
