We started today with the horrendous news about the death of Ricardo dos Santos. David and Scott begin the show processing the tragedy, and then cover the details of the Da Hui Backdoor Shootout, Bruce Irons and Mason Ho’s RC car races, Zoltan’s kickflips, Kelly’s rumored involvement with Firewire, and Miki Dora’s personal attack against David. That’s right, huge drama this week in surfing and we get to the bottom of it all. Enjoy!

RIP RICARDO DOS SANTOS

So unbelievably senseless and tragic. Details are still emerging, but StabMag.com is updating their post regularly. LINK HERE

PE’AHI GREEN LIT THEN RED LIT

The WSL officially called it on for tomorrow and then officially called it off. Oh, and Kelly’s in the draw! There are still 5 weeks in the waiting period so hopefully see the contest run.

DA HUI BACKDOOR SHOOTOUT

Congratulations Mason Ho! Surfline did a pretty killer job covering the event. Here’s the link to their story. And equally entertaining is the link to Mason’s interview on BeachGrit.com

Bruce Irons got a 10 at Backdoor but the webcast camera’s missed it! Thankfully, Tyler Rock from Freesurf Magazine was on the beach and had a camera rolling. Here it is.

John John wasn’t allowed to surf in the event because it wasn’t sanctioned by the WSL, but he got this wave at Off The Wall.

KOOK

The cowardly Brazilian off-duty military police officer, Luiz Paulo Mota Brentano, who shot and killed Ricardo dos Santos. Brentano and his brother were apprehended by military police following the attack and it’s understood Brentano has a heavy history of brutality. The soldier, stationed in Joinville, had previously had two complaints brought before the Public Prosector’s Office in Santa Catarina over alleged crimes of abuse of authority, bodily injury, threat and home invasion. In both cases he was acquitted over a lack of evidence.

Play

This episode originally aired on January 20th, 2014.

We’re launching the new year with a discussion with surfboard shaper Donald Brink. Donald is renowned for his hand-crafted asymmetrical surfboard designs. In this episode, Donald shares about his youth growing up in South Africa, why he believes nearly all board designs can be improved upon with an asymmetrical change, and the importance of cultivating a fascination for the ocean.

There has been a few worth-viewing videos of surfers riding asymmetrical boards. While they are not Donald’s boards (they’re both shaped by Ryan Burch), we still recommend you take a gander.

Dane Reynolds is pregnant. Kelly Slater has a Master’s Degree. Gabriel is NOT the first Brazilian surf champ. We uncover some hard truths in the first show of 2015. Enjoy!

PIPE MASTERS RECAP

Gabriel clinched his world title by making the final. Julian narrowly beat him in the final during a very close final exchange, and also won the Triple Crown by doing so. Phenomenal finish.

My favorite wave of the event? Alejo Muniz’s Backdoor buzzer beater against Slater.
