122 – Surf News, March 18, 2016

This week we cover the glory and drama that was the Quiksilver Pro Gold Coast, including the injuries, the upside down world rankings, Duke-esque maneuvers, and so much more. Enjoy!

Mike Rowe is a great shaper on the Outer Banks. His label is called Hooked Surfboards. If you’re ever on the Outer Banks, order a board from Mike and stay in his epic bungalow in Kitty Hawk, 2 blocks from the beach.

Stu Kennedy entered this event as an injury replacement and exits as the #3 surfer in the world! (And check out that Club Sandwich turn at the 11 second mark).

Kelly struggles on his ‘Banana’ model KS Designs surfboard.

Filipe gets injured trying to stomp an air in the semifinals. He’ll be out for the next two events.

Wilko takes down Kolohe in the final.

Jordy Smith dismantling Mozambique in preparation for Snapper.

The “Club Sandwich” maneuver. Stuey did a few sick ones and then Joanne stomped this one, making her the first female to pull one in competition.

This week’s Kook are the listeners who think that David is Scott and then send him their hate mail. David gets enough hate mail of his own, send Scott’s directly to him! :)

    Yeah guy,
Here’s my suggestion for improving the tour.
Aggregate the waiting periods for each leg of the tour. There is nothing worse than seeing the contest get skunked on the Goldy when Bells or West Oz is pumping, or it being onshore mush at Bells while there is an East Coast Low sending ruler edged perfection to Snapper.
Same thing on the Pacific leg, if Chopes is off the chain and Cloudbreak is small, it is frustrating for fans, and I guess surfers as well.
Imagine if the CT committed to running the 3 Aust contests in a 6 week window and went to wherever has the best forecast first up. We would have a much better chance of having firing waves for all stops. They could do the same thing with the Euro legs.
Only downside is I have to put up with longer carpark closures at Bells, but that is happening every year anyway.
    You know it makes sense.
BTW, you’ve got to stop hating on the women’s tour so much. 😛

    David hi –

Love the podcast, and you do a great job as a journalist and broadcaster. I’m Language and Rhetoric faculty in the English department at one of the best universities in the US, and have zero patience for snobby grammar police-types who don’t actually know a damn thing about language science looking down on people for “incorrect” grammar. So please take this as coming with all respect and no disdain.

You, and David Bass, mispronounce the word “aesthetic,” and it’s a word you tend to use a lot. You guys say S-STET-IC. But the word is pronounced S-THET (like the word threat w/o the r)-IC. The reason you do this is because the word, which traditionally denotes a (stultifyingly boring) branch of philosophy concerned with value judgement about outward appearance of things, was at some point co-opted by the cosmetics industry. People who put make-up on other people are “estheticians,” and in pronouncing that jumble of quick, tongue-twisting sibilant syllables most people don’t give their face time to make the “th” sound in the middle. Then that mispronunciation get shortened by people who hear it regularly and we get S-STET-IC instead of S-THET-IC.

Anyway wouldn’t have even mentioned it except you’ve expressed on your show a few times that you’re interesting in broadcasters saying things correctly. Say it the THET way a couple of times and it’ll stick for life.

    Keep up the great work!

Scott Bass! Sorry – went to high school with the guy even. Hopefully he doesn’t remember my name either :)

Hey David – big fan of the show, long time listener etc. Keep up the great work!
Just to pick up on some of the more interesting topics…
First of all, Scott is an integral part of your show so I think it makes sense for listeners to give feedback here on what he says too… especially if you want to keep them on your site. Understand that you would like feedback on his views to be separated out from your views!
But whilst we are here… I totally agree with Nick that you didn’t give MomJon the credit due in that show. You may have in the past – but I was equally as uncomfortable listening to the arguments about the uncles that deserve so much credit – bullshit!
    Also whilst I am here.. a definition for Scott on racism. He clearly doesn’t understand it – and it does include having prejudices against nations, like Brazil;
According to the 1965 UN International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination,[19] the term “racial discrimination” shall mean any distinction, exclusion, restriction, or preference based on race, colour, descent, or national or ethnic origin that has the purpose or effect of nullifying or impairing the recognition, enjoyment or exercise, on an equal footing, of human rights and fundamental freedoms in the political, economic, social, cultural or any other field of public life.
Seems like he is coming round on his sexist views… so if we could just straighten him out on this one! ;-))
    Love Matt (from Ireland)
ps. Keep the Allman Bros coming!

Noted! All the feedback is welcomed here, but I have been chastised for things that Scott has said and which I vehemently argued against. Simple confusion, but no biggie. Also, let me proclaim my love, adoration, respect and veneration of MomJohn. She’s a powerhouse and deserving of all the credit for all 3 of her son’s success. Nothing but love!
